Record producer Rick Rubin has written an extraordinary book entitled “The Creative Act: A Way of Being.” I highly recommend it to anyone wanting to dive deeper into this subject, especially those people who are driven to their chosen art. In the first chapter he states that “Creativity is not a rare ability” it “is a fundamental aspect of being human.” We constantly create and express ourselves in new ways, including such things as “a conversation, the solution to a problem, a note to a friend, the rearrangement of furniture in a room, a new route home to avoid a traffic jam.”
I want to explore the idea of Creativity and Art, knowing that these subjects have been debated and written about for centuries, but with a view of it that makes sense to me. This exploration would include: where do humans get the drive to create art; what is the difference between Art and Craft; why surrealism “works;” and the experience of the creative act.
My hope is that you will join me in the exploration and tell me your view of it. And keep creating.
